Explanatory Note
Having looked at these pages of the book of the universe, the sūrah turns to the revealed book and those who recite it, their hopes and expected rewards. Reciting God’s book means something other than going through its words, vocalizing them or not; it means reading with reflection that leads to understanding, action and behaviour. This also entails attending regularly to prayer, giving secretly and openly in charity, as well as entertaining the hope that what is so offered will never be a failed bargain. Those who do all this know that what God has in store is far more valuable than what they give away. As they give only for God’s sake, dealing with Him directly, their bargain is especially profitable.
3. Surah Overview
The internal evidence of the style shows that the period of the revelation of this Surah is probably the middle Makkan period when antagonism had grown quite strong so every sort of mischief was being adopted to frustrate the mission of the Prophet.
- The Prophet Muhammad [saw] said, “Whoever recited the Qur’ān, studied it, and acted according to what it contains; on the Day of Judgment his parents will be dressed with a crown of light, its brightness is like that of the sun. And his parents will be adorned with two bracelets, of which the whole world is not equivalent to them [in worth]. So they will say, ‘Why are we being adorned with these?’ It will be said, ‘This is because of your child taking [the recitation, teaching and acting upon] the Qur’ān.” [Hakim, Targhib wa Tarhib - صحيح [Sahih]
