Surah al-Ahzab (The Confederates) 33 : 66

يَوْمَ تُقَلَّبُ وُجُوهُهُمْ فِى ٱلنَّارِ يَقُولُونَ يَٰلَيْتَنَآ أَطَعْنَا ٱللَّهَ وَأَطَعْنَا ٱلرَّسُولَا۠

Explanatory Note

In the midst of all this suffering, they appear very miserable: “On the day when their faces shall be tossed about in the fire.” The fire surrounds them from every corner. Yet the description here is intended to exaggerate the movement so as to feel that the fire touches every spot on their faces. “They will say: Would that we had obeyed God and obeyed His Messenger.” It is a useless wish that can in no way be accepted. It is now too late for anything. They can only express regret and feel remorse.

The Surah discusses three important events which are: the Battle of the Trench (or Al-Ahzab: the Confederates) which took place in the month of Shawwal 5 A.H.; the raid on Banu Quraythah which was made in Dhil-Qa’dah 5 A.H.; and the Prophet’s marriage with Zaynab which also was contracted in Dhil-Qa’dah 5 A.H. These historical events accurately determine the period of the revelation of this Surah.
