Surah al-Hashr (The Gathering ) 59 : 4

That is because they opposed Allāh and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allāh - then indeed, Allāh is severe in retribution.

Explanatory Note

The Arabic word, shaaaq, translated here as 'opposed', means to take a side other than God's. As He explains why they merited such punishment, God made His Messenger's side His own. Therefore, in the second half of the verse He mentions their being in defiance of Him only, as this automatically includes defying the Prophet. When defiant people take a side opposite to God's, they behave insolently. Rather stupidly, such small, powerless creatures expose themselves to God's anger and incur His severe retribution.

7. Period of Revelation

Bukhari and Muslim contain a hadith from Sa’id bin Jubair to the effect “When I asked Abdullah bin Abbas about Surah Al-Hashr, he replied that it was sent down concerning the battle against the Banu-Nadheer just as Surah 8: al-Anfal (The Spoils of War) was sent down concerning the Battle of Badr. “As for the question as to when this battle took place, Imam Zuhri has stated on the authority of Urwah bin Zubair that it took place six months after the Battle of Badr. However, Ibn Sa’d, Ibn Hisham and Baladhuri regard it as an event of Rabi’ al-Awwal, 4 A.H.
