Surah as-Saff (The Ranks ) 61 : 2

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لِمَ تَقُولُونَ مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ

Explanatory Note

A group of believers are strongly reproached for something they did that was particularly hateful to God. This was inappropriate behaviour for believers Here, we see some early Muslims weakening to the extent that they say one thing and do another.

  • Umar ibn al-Khattab said,  " لا يَغُرَّنَّكُمْ مَنْ قَرَأَ الْقُرْآنَ ، إِنَّمَا هُوَ كَلامٌ نَتَكَلَّمُ بِهِ ، وَلَكِنِ انْظُرُوا مَنْ يَعْمَلُ بِهِ "Do not be deluded/decieved by the one who recites the Qur'an, for it is words we use when we speak. However, look at the one who acts by it [i.e. the Qur'an]" [Ref: Khateeb al-Baghdadi in Iqtidha al-Ilm wa Amal]
